onStage – Before Quantum Theatre’s 2025-2026 season gets underway next month, the company is already looking ahead to the following season.
Quantum, Shakespeare and Carrie Furnace will continue their triple-threat collaboration – innovative company, The Bard and a historic site – with The Tempest, set for the summer of 2026.
The announcement of The Tempest, to be directed by Karla Boos, is in addition to the previously announced 2025-2026 productions, which now have dates and sites, starting with a brand-new adaptation of Chekov’s The Seagull in July.
Quantum was most recently at Carrie Furnace with King Lear in 2019 and Hamlet in 2023. The tradition began in 1997, when Quantum staged Antony & Cleopatra, in collaboration with the Industrial Arts Co-op, which was salvaging materials at the expansive Swissvale/Rankin site.
2025-2026 QUANTUM THEATRE SEASON
SEAGULL: A new adaptation based on the play by Anton Chekhov, adapted and directed by Joanie Schultz (right)
July 25 – August 17, 2025
Staged outdoors, by the pond, on Chatham University’s Shadyside Campus
Seagull explores Chekov’s story “through our evolving romantic lens and brings new resonance to the timeless themes of desire and identity.”
ENRON: Written by Lucy Prebble, directed by Kyle Haden (above), and presented in collaboration with Attack Theatre
October 30 – November 23, 2025
Staged in One Oxford Center, Downtown
Enron is “a high-octane look into the glittering freefall of American capitalism … a cautionary tale about the sexy 1990s that we’d do well to heed in the ‘reevaluate regulation present.’ ” Playwright Prebble is three-time Emmy Award-winner for HBO’s Succession. Note: Parking in the building is free and there will be “drinks at the Rivers Club for those with the secret handshake.”
10 OUT OF 12: Written by Anne Washburn, directed by Andrew William Smith
April 3 – 26, 2026
Staged at the Mellon Institute, Oakland
The comedy’s title refers to the number of hours the actors’ union allows “for one very long day in the technical process of building a show. … Washburn catapults us into the world beyond the curtain, capturing the magical chaos of a tech rehearsal.” Audience members wear headsets to eavesdrop on the goings-on backstage, which “makes for a rare insight into the rhythms, joys and frustrations of making theater.”
