Power. Deceit. Money. Lust. ENRON isn’t just a play — it’s a high-octane odyssey through the glittering freefall of American capitalism. Staged high above the city in the retro-cool Oxford Centre, this production offers a wild ride with characters you’ll remember from corporate infamy: Jeff Skilling, Andy Fastow, and that Southern charmer Ken Lay. The result is a cautionary tale about the sexy 1990s that we’d do well to heed in the ‘reevaluate regulation’ present.

Playwright Lucy Prebble, three-time Emmy Award-winner for Succession, is just the modern-day Cassandra to give us this biting satire of suits and spreadsheets. Quantum’s cast of 14 is led by Kyle Haden and Attack Theatre, providing energy to spare and choreographed chaos. Business sharks that we are, we’ve negotiated free parking in the building, and drinks at the Rivers Club for those with the secret handshake.

The Masterminds

Lucy Prebble

British playwright and producer

A British playwright and producer, Lucy Prebble most recently served as a writer and an executive producer on the acclaimed HBO drama series Succession, for which she received three Emmy Awards for Outstanding Drama Series. As a playwright, she wrote ENRON in 2010 which premiered in London’s West End and Broadway. The play earned a nomination for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play.

Kyle Haden

Artistic leader, director, educator, and actor

Kyle Haden is an artistic leader, director, educator, and actor. He serves as Carnegie Mellon University’s Senior Associate Head of the School of Drama and an Associate Professor of Acting, as well as the artistic producer of ColLABo, a production development incubator. As a director, he has helmed various world premieres of productions across the country, including Quantum Theatre’s A Devil is a Lie (2023).

Attack Theatre

Choreographers, dancers, movement directors, educators

ENRON is presented in collaboration with Attack Theatre, a company of artists, doers, thinkers, risk-takers, dancers, administrators, entrepreneurs, and makers. Founded in 1994 by Michele de la Reza and Peter Kope as a collaboration between two dancers and a city, Attack Theatre fuses modern dance, original live music, and interdisciplinary art forms to create engaging dance performances. We create work at the intersection of art and community, resulting in productions that are personal, authentic, welcoming, and fearless.

The Power Players

Joe McGranaghan

Jeffrey Skilling, CEO of Enron

A visionary who thrived on risk, Skilling led a cut-throat team that employed ‘mark-to-market accounting,’ allowing the company to record potential profits on certain projects immediately after contracts were signed, regardless of the actual profits. With a Darwinian view of what makes the world work, Skilling believed that money and fear were the only things that motivated people.

Insiders note: Skilling was born in Pittsburgh. His family moved to New Jersey before settling in Illinois.

John Michnya

Andrew Fastow, CFO of Enron

A promising young mind, Fastow joined Enron and quickly became Skilling’s protege who rose through the ranks to become the company’s CFO. Fastow designed a complex web of companies that solely did business with Enron, with the dual purpose of raising money for the company and hiding its massive losses in their quarterly balance sheets. One of his partnerships, LJM (named for his wife and two sons) made Fastow a staggering $45 million.

Christine Weber

Claudia Roe

As the lone female lead, Christine Weber will portray Claudia Roe – a fictional character created by the brilliant mind of Lucy Prebble. A moral counterpoint, Roe consistently questions the ethical and financial validity of Skilling’s scheming ways. She goes head-to-head with Skilling for the position of CEO and gives him a run for his money.

Ken Bolden

Ken Lay, Founder and Chairman of Enron

Born in rural Missouri to a Baptist preacher, Ken Lay grew up in poverty – daydreaming about becoming rich. Thanks to the largest accounting scandal of the 20^th century, Lay became one of America’s highest-paid CEOs, collecting more than $220 million in cash and stocks between 1998 and 2001. A southern charmer, his friendly, folksy demeanor and humble upbringing were key to his public image as a self-made success story. His charisma was a significant factor in his ascent to power and his success in inspiring confidence in employees and investors.

Brandy Aven is an Associate Professor in Organizational Theory, Strategy, and Entrepreneurship at the Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University. Her main areas of interest are fraud and entrepreneurship.

Rebekah Apple teaches Ethical Analysis and Organizational Ethics at Carnegie Mellon University, and bioethics to medical students at the University of Pittsburgh.

Bryan Routledge, PhD is an associate professor of finance at the Tepper School of Business. His research applies quantitative text analysis and natural language processing to economic and financial research questions.
